Hiking Tips Graukogel - Bad Gastein

1. Hiking on the Hüttenkogel (2.231 m) - easy walk

  • Walking time: 3 Hours
  • Difference in altitude: 277 m
  • Starting and finishing point: Graukogel mountain lift station
A short, but very rewarding walk, beautiful views of the of the Hohe Tauern mountains. The small mountain top plateau has a securing rope on the steep rocky edge. There are turns leading up to the Hüttenkogel immediately after leaving the Mountain Lift Station (1,954). There is an impressive view to the South West on the way up: Radhausberg, Schareck, Sonnblick, Bockharttal with waterfall... It is recommended to use the same route back down as up. Once you reach the lift station its back down with the chairlift down to the valley.

2. Walk on the Graukogel (2.492 m) – Mountain top walk

  • Head for heights necessary.
  • Walking time: 4 hours
  • Difference in altitude: 538 m
  • Starting and finishing point: Graukogel mountain lift station
A very rewarding mountain top walk with a beautiful round panoramic view of the Gasteiner Mountain World – from the Graukogel Mountain Station and return about 4 hours. From the mountain station there is a walk to the Hüttenkogel (2,231m), afterwards there is a turning leading to the Graukogel (2.492 m). There are more steep curves on the way to the mountain top. Just before the top there is a crossing over a very steep slope, this needs extra special caution especially when snow is lying. We would recommend you go back down the same route as the way up.

3. A walk to the Reedsee Lake and in the Kötschachtal valley- intermediate walk

  • Walking time: 7 hours
  • Starting point: Graukogel mountain lift station
  • Difference in altitude: 367m up hill walk, downhill to the Kötschachtal approx. 1.200 m
  • Finish: Grüner Baum bus stop
The Reedsee Lake (1.831 m) nestles in a grove of Pine Trees, with the Tischlerkars as a breathing backdrop. Take the chairlift up to Graukogel (1.954 m). From the lift station the route leads to the Palfnersee Lake (2,074m) and across steep slopes to the Palfnerscharte (2,321m). The way back down is by passing the Windschursee Lake to the enchanting Reedsee (the mountain hut is not open for business). Steep descent across the Kohlplatzl into the Kötschachtal valley - Grünen Baum.
